Jesper Grud Skat Madsen obtained his PhD in Molecular Biology from the University of Southern Denmark in 2016, and did postdoctoral research with Professor Susanne Mandrup. In his postdoctoral research, he worked primarily as a bioinformatician analyzing and integrating multi-modal functional genomics datasets (e.g. ChIP-seq, ATAC-seq, DNase-seq, RNA-seq, Hi-C and capture Hi-C) to study the basic mechanisms underlying transcriptional regulation. He developed new computational methods to quantify nascent transcription and identify key transcriptional regulators. In 2019, he was recruited into ATLAS and the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (BMB) at SDU as a Junior Group Leader. From November 2021 to year end of 2023 he was based at Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at SDU, and is currently employed as Associate Professor at BMB.

As a member of ATLAS, Jesper Grud Skat Madsen and his group will focus on developing methods to understand transcriptional regulation underlying the remarkable plasticity of fully differentiated tissues. We will employ advanced statistical techniques, such as machine learning to identify novel patterns and rules underlying transcriptional control of tissue plasticity of adipose tissue and liver in health and disease.

He is leading Work Package 4 on Disease trajectories and biomarkers together with Assoc. Prof., MD, Mette Munk Lauridsen.
