During her undergraduate studies Frederike performed a research project in the lab of Jonas A. Nilsson in Umeå, Sweden where she developed a deeper understanding of tumor metabolism with particular focus on adipose tissue and muscle wasting during cancer cachexia.

Frederike completed her Master’s degree at the University of Hamburg, Germany in the program ‘Molecular Life Sciences’ in February 2019.

In her master thesis, performed in the lab of Jörg Heeren in Hamburg, Germany she focused on brown adipose tissue whitening and its consequences for tissue integrity and systemic metabolism. In metabolic studies, she identified a transcriptional regulator that is involved in the mitochondrial degradation during brown adipose tissue whitening.

Early on she developed a strong interest in adipose tissue physiology, mitochondrial bioenergetics and molecular mechanisms related to systemic metabolism and associated diseases.
