Fabian studied Human Biology at the Philipps-University in Marburg (Germany). At the end of which he joined the group of Prof. Ritva Tikkanen at the Institute for Biochemistry in Giessen (Germany) for his Diploma thesis where he investigated the impact of specific plasma membrane domains (lipid rafts) on mitochondrial respiratory chain activity. In the following he moved to Cologne (Germany) to work on his Doctor (rer. nat.) degree in the group of Prof. Thorsten Hoppe (University of Cologne, CECAD Research Center). During this time, he primarily focused on protein homeostatic mechanisms under the control of olfactory food perception in C. elegans, mainly along the brain-to-gut axis. He is currently extending his research as a postdoctoral fellow in the group of Assoc. Prof. Zach Gerhart-Hines at the NNF-CBMR in Copenhagen. Here, he is working on protein and metabolic (proteometabolic) homeostasis in brown adipocytes – with a particular interest in mitochondria-to-nucleus signaling in dependency of lipid membrane composition and the transition into whole-body physiology.
