Adipocyte gene expression in obesity – new review from ADIPOSIGN researchers

30.06.2023

Several studies have investigated the changes in gene expression of adipose tissue during obesity. However, since adipocytes comprise less than 30% of the cells in the adipose tissue, it is difficult to retrieve meaningful information about adipocyte-specific gene expression from such studies. Therefore, to understand adipocyte-specific changes and how obesity affects adipocyte gene expression, methodologies that enable specific detection of adipocyte gene expression are essential, but only a limited number of studies have done this. In this article, published in Current Opinion in Genetics & Development, ADIPOSIGN researchers review the insight gained from these studies and discuss how changes in adipocyte size and heterogeneity may affect adipocyte gene expression.
