Writer’s Readings: The Literary Pilgrimage in Christina Hesselholdt’s Selskabet (Companions)
If post-critical reading broadens the field of reading from critical reading to other uses of literature, then one of the uses that deserve attention is the reading of writers. After brief discussions of post-critique and of writerly reading (to use the creative writing-term), I would like to focus on a particular kind of writerly reading (or use?), that of the literary pilgrimage. Might we regard the literary pilgrimage  as a performative reading? What would that mean, and what other characteristics might this kind of reading have? I shall try to answer these questions by a reading of the literary pilgrimages in Christina Hesselholdt's Selskabet (Companions in the English translation). There are two major pilgrimages in the novel: “Vandringen” in the first book, "Camilla and the Horse", and “Husene og deres geniselvmordersker I-II" in the second book, "Camilla - og resten af selskabet”.
