Arrival in Odense. Student assistants will be present and help with accommodation and practical matters. (In English)

Reception (in English)

Welcome by the Dean of the Humanities at the University of Southern Denmark Simon Møberg Torp.

Introduction to the Hans Christian Andersen Centre by the Head of the Hans Christian Centre, Prof. Johs. Nørregaard Frandsen.

Welcome by Head of the Danish Programme, Associate Professor Bjarne le Fevre Jakobsen.

 

Presentation of Student Assistants and Programme directors

Associate Professor Mogens Davidsen (Advanced course) and Associate Professor Dag Heede (Beginners course)

 

Course introduction. Discussion of mutual expectations, work load, preparation and requirements. Exam details. Syllabus and teaching materials. Role plays and interviews. Presentation by participants. Introduction to basic vocabulary.

 

Social program in Odense in the evening with both groups (in English).

 

2. Saturday, August 11th

Course teaching: vocabulary, introductions, greeting. Alphabet

 

3. Sunday, August 12th

Dag Heede

Course teaching. Out-of-class exercises

 

4. Monday, August 13th

Dag Heede

Course teaching. Vocabulary. Listening and understanding-exercises. Pronunciation.

 

Tuesday, August 14th

Student assistants

Social program in Odense. In English.

 

Wednesday, August 15th

Student assistants

Social program in Odense. In English.

Homework: small written exercise

5. Thursday, August 16th

Dag Heede

Course teaching. Vocabulary. Basic grammar. Pronunciation. Exercises are returned.

Out-of-class exercises

 

Social excursion for both groups: Visit to Hans Christian Andersen Museum, The Cathedral of Odense (containing the remains of King Kanut the Holy), city walk with fairy tale sculptures. Tour is in English.

 

6. Friday, August 17th

Course teaching. Lecture on Danish language with exercises by Associate Professor Anna Vibeke Lindø

 

Saturday, August 18th

Excursion for both groups with Mogens Davidsen and Dag Heede:  Denmark’s “birth certificate”: the Jelling Stone and museum, The Viking Age. Trapholt: design and modern art. Kolding, Jutland. In English.

 

Sunday, August 19th

Day off. Small written exercise.

 

7. Monday, August 20th

Dag Heede.

Course teaching.

Lecture about Danish pronunciation with exercises by Associate Professor Peter Nielsen.

Midterm evaluation.

 

8. Tuesday, August 21st

Course teaching. Exercises are returned. Out-of-class exercises. Vocabulary.

 

9. Wednesday, August 22nd

Dag Heede

Course teaching.

Lecture about Danish grammar with exercises by Associate Professor Bjarne le Fevre Jakobsen.

 

10. Thursday, August 23rd

Dag Heede

Course teaching. Vocabulary and pronunciation.

 

11. Friday, August 24th

Dag Heede

Literature teaching: “sample”: Isak Dinesen/Karen Blixen: “The Blank Page” (“Det ubeskrevne Blad”). In English.

 

Saturday, August 25th

Mogens Davidsen and Dag Heede

Excursion for both groups to Copenhagen, Humlebæk and Rungstedlund. In English.

 

Sunday, August 26th

Day off. Small written exercise.

 

12. Monday, August 27th

Dag Heede

Course teaching.

 

Excursion to village on Fyn with bicycle trip and typical Danish meal.

 

13. Tuesday, August 28th

Dag Heede

Course teaching.

Social arrangement for both groups: showing of Lars von Trier: Breaking the Waves. Introduction by Mogens Davidsen (in English).

 

14. Wednesday, August 29th

Mogens Davidsen and Dag Heede

Written and Oral exams

 

15. Thursday, August 30th

General introduction to Danish culture by Mogens Davidsen in English.

Final evaluation.

 

Wrap up, hand out of certificates and social farewell arrangement for both groups.

 

Friday, August 31th

Departure from Odense. Student assistants will be present to assist.
