The Master programme in Biology has a scope of 120 ECTS, equivalent to two years' full-time work.
The first semester consists of 30 ECTS worth of courses, most of which are elective. During the second sementer, you can either take elective courses or do an internship, according to your professional interests and desired career path. This allows you to opt for a broad profile or specialise in one of the following fields:
The primary emphasis of the second year is research, the result of which will be an individual thesis (60 ECTS).
Graduates are awarded the title Master of Science (MSc) in Biology.
Below you will find brief descriptions of the only courses that are mandatory in the programme.
Please refer to the programme outline above in order to see the complete outline of the Master programme in Biology. If you have any questions regarding the courses, please contact the Department of Biology.
BB839 Planning and evaluation of biological studies (5 ECTS)
Throughout the course, students will be trained in summarizing biological topics with the aim of planning, evaluating and presenting their own experimental, biological investigations. The course will enable the students to critically evaluate research papers from the international scientific literature. A variety of studies reflecting the real complexity in a number of experimental biological disciplines, will be reviewed. Students will learn to use statistical as well as graphical software.
BB844 Field course in terrestrial or marine biology (5 ECTS)
Students plan, carry out, and analyze the results of a biological field project. The process includes the search for relevant scientific literature and the evaluation of results obtained in relation to existing knowledge in the field. Specific research topics are chosen among pertinent biological issues in the natural environments that surround the field stations of the Department of Biology, where the practical part of the course takes place. The participants will gain insights into the different stages of the research process in general, and to the principles and methods of biological fieldwork in particular.
Scientific SCUBA Diver
At the University of Southern Denmark, you have a unique opportunity to obtain a commercial diving certificate as part of the MSc programme in Biology.
Scientific SCUBA Diver is a commercial diving course offered by the University of Southern Denmark. Students who complete the course will obtain solid diving experience with focus on safe and professional diving and will be provided with the necessary skills to plan and carry out scientific diving operations, as well as using SCUBA diving as a research tool for studying the fascinating underwater environment.
At the same time, being a certified commercial SCUBA diver is a strong qualification for newly graduated biologists who want to work in jobs that involve diving.
While working on your thesis, you will be offered a work station in the department's special work room for thesis students. You will typically be affiliated to a research group at the department, which will advice and guide you when you search for literature, plan experiments and process your research data.
If you wish to pursue a career in research, you can apply for the PhD programme.
- To be considered for a 3-year PhD fellowship, you must hold a Master's degree.
- To be considered for a 4-year PhD fellowship, you must hold a Bachelor's degree and have passed Master's degree exams corresponding to 60 ECTS.
