An Academic Introduction – about Studying at a University
Your contact with SDU’s Study Board will only be necessary as and when there are individual, often personal, or extraordinary circumstances from which exemptions or changes must be made in respect of the general rules mentioned in the syllabus or in the course description.
The Study Board also ensures that your rights as a student are respected in relation to current legislation relating to the education. The Study Board is also responsible for the development and quality assurance of the academic content of the education.
As a student, you will have the opportunity to run for election and get elected as a member of the Study Board and thereby have a direct influence on matters affecting the master’s degree studies on the Social & Health Science faculty. You will hear more about this at the start of your studies.
Programme regulations of the study has been prepared by the Study Board and approved by a faculty. The syllabus regulates the course of your study and describes the rules, framework, competencies, etc. You can read more about the programme regulations on the study’s website.
The course descriptions are part of the programme regulations. The courses are described here in detail in relation to purpose, learning objectives, form of examination, etc. You can read about the course descriptions on the study’s website.
The study guide specifies where and when the teaching takes place. The study guide is published well in advance of the study´s commencement and is found on the website or ItsLearning. The study guide is a detailed description of the syllabus and literature for each teaching module. You will find the syllabus and the study guide for each subject on ItsLearning.
Should you have a need to find specific online articles that are mentioned in your syllabus, and need help, then please refer to SDU’s Guide for Finding Online Articles.
The teaching is arranged as a combination of lectures, dialogue, discussions, group work, etc. Both theoretical and practical perspectives will be included in all courses, and cases are used extensively. Moreover, in some of the courses, students will be taught also by means of simulations. The teaching can be supplemented by online activities and group assignments in between classes.
Supervision is offered to students doing the Technology Management Project and the Master Project and in some cases also in connection with other assignments. This will be stated in the individual course descriptions.
At the end of each semester, great emphasis is placed on the evaluation of the teaching. This takes place digitally. A link is sent to your student e-mail a few days prior to the end of each semester. The written evaluation may be supplemented by an oral evaluation during the last teaching session. The coordinator responsible for the subject draws up an action plan listing conditions that need to be improved for next time. This is discussed at Study Board level and used by the Head of Studies when next term’s planning starts. Response rates and overall student satisfaction with regards to teaching quality are published on the website.
All courses finish with an exam, which gives ECTS-credits. The examinations are either with or without censorship.
There is great variation in the types of examination. This ensures that there is an individual or varied assessment of the student. The type of examination is specified in each subject description.
Please refer to the Examination Page for more information, including information on how to avoid irregularities for the examination.
