The iGEM programme run by the International Genetically Engineered Machine Foundation provides considerable encouragement to drop traditional thinking and get inventive, way outside the proverbial box.
A team of 12 SDU students from eight different teaching programmes as diverse as biochemistry and molecular biology, pharmacy, biomedicine, history, philosophy, physics and biology is participating in the synthetic biology world championships. Their entry focuses on using a bacterial solar battery to provide green energy via bioelectricity. At the 2017 championship, the team won a Gold Medal and were nominated 'Best Energy Project'.
