Preboarding is a huge change in the new employees’ life. Not only is it a new job, but it is also a whole new country, which can cause a lot of insecurity and stress for the new employee. ISO has a couple of advices for a smoother transition of the new international employee, which you can find below.
Before the new employee arrives:
- Arrange a breakfast, where the employee can get an introduction to the team
- It could be a good idea to inform your current employees about the new international employee in an email with the new employee Cc
- You might be used to hiring new employees, but it is not always that the new employee has to move to a new country and start a new life – so remember a good welcome for the new employee
- Find a buddy for the new employee, who can help smoothen the start of the stay
- Include or forward relevant emails from the Department or team to the new employee
- Advice your future colleague to contact ISO, if they have questions about moving to Denmark
- Remember the cultural differences between the Danish employees and the new international employee. In some cultures, it is very important that the manager him-/herself acknowledge their work and effort in person. It will also ensure the new employee feels more certain about that he/she has made the right choice about their future and employment at SDU
- Consider to set-up a meeting between the new employee and ISO’s legal advisor regarding the preparations before the arrival in Denmark. You can contact ISO at: iso@sdu.dk
In case the new employee has an accompanying spouse/partner, you can contact ISO’s social advisor, Annika Jarl at: jarl@sdu.dk
After the new employee arrives:
- Arrange a breakfast, where the employee can get an introduction to the team
- Arrange a meeting a with the staff representative and working environment representative and the Head of the Department
