Process tracing is widely used in case study designs across the social sciences, and constitutes one of the most important tools for qualitative researchers. But it is not always easy to know when process tracing is appropriate, and how to best use it. This workshop aims to make process tracing approachable. Aimed at students and interested researchers, this short workshop will introduce the concepts and best practice of process tracing. The workshop will lead you through the research process, from theory development to data collection to analysis, illustrating each step with examples from different fields of research.
The course will be led by Ingo Rohlfing, Professor in Qualitative Methods and Political Science at the University of Bremen, and one of the foremost experts on qualitative methodology, case study designs and the use of process tracing. His publications include the textbook Case Studies and Causal Inference: An Integrative Framework (Research Methods Series). Basingstoke: Palgrave Macmillan (2012) as well as various articles on methodology.
