The Faculty of Engineering is establishing a new section focused on digital and high-frequency electronics. This section will participate in and complement SDU’s world-leading activities in robotics and drone activities.

The Head of the Unit will be Emad Samuel Malki Ebeid. He has a background in Electronics, Telecommunications, and Computer engineering. Emad has more than 20 years of experience in Embedded Systems with a Ph.D. in Distributed Embedded Systems from Verona University, Italy. Further, Emad has coordinated and participated in many national and European research projects to bring embedded systems into robotics, drones, smart grids, and Internet of Things (IoT) applications.

In the last five years, he has worked at the Maersk Mc Kinney Moller Institute, SDU. He has focused on developing advanced onboard computers and charging systems to support autonomous drone operations for inspecting large infrastructures such as powerlines, railways, and bridges.

Emad, can you tell us about SDU Digital and High-Frequency Electronics?

“It is a new section that offers education and research in digital electronics. It focuses on advanced systems that serve the industrial needs in building complex devices such as robotics, drones, automotive, aviation, IoT sensors, and so on.”

Why are Digital and High-Frequency Electronics critical?

“Because they build the “brain” of any complex devices. Indeed, more than 60% of robots’ components are made of electronics. In order to have a robot working efficiently and in real-time, it requires a deep understanding of electronics: hardware/software architectures, memories, interfaces, and communication techniques. For instance, today’s cars are packed with sensors, actuators, hardware accelerators, and high-frequency electronics to execute driving commands in real time. You can understand how important the car brakes on time!”

What is your ambition for SDU Digital and High-Frequency Electronics?

“My ambition is to create a world-renowned section in Digital and High-Frequency electronics that offers excellent engineering graduates. This will guarantee a skilled working force for the booming technology sector in Odense and worldwide. The education will be based on the recent research outcomes in the digital electronics domain, ensuring the typical up-to-date education that SDU offers to all of its students.”

How can electronics engineers help to power the green transition?

“Electronics is the heart of many devices that power the green transition. Electric cars, for instance, are full of electronics and embedded devices. The same goes for the many embedded sensors that monitor the environment and provide data to reduce CO2 emissions. Our graduates will be specialized in designing and developing efficient components that are the tools for achieving the green transition objectives.”

Head of the Department of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Christian T. Veje, is pleased to include Emad Samuel Malki Ebeid in the staff. He believes that Emad is the right person to lead SDU Digital and High-Frequency Electronics.

"I have chosen Emad for this position as he has demonstrated excellent results and is an experienced and internationally recognized researcher in high-frequency and digital electronics. Through his extensive research project collaborations, he has shown a remarkable ability to lead groups of researchers. I am confident that he is the right choice as head of the new section in our department."
