How to collaborate with MCI

The Mads Clausen Institute offers various opportunities for collaboration to companies. 

Companies can work together with students within our 7 engineering education programmes. More than 50 researchers are open for collaboration on technology development or prototyping. Furthermore, we offer services such as measurements, testing and consulting to companies, providing access to our state-of-the-art labs and deep technology expertise.

Collaboration with educational programmes at MCI

Semester projects/Experts in teams

Companies suggest a topic to student teams and co-supervise the progress. The topic shall match the curriculum. "Experts in teams" consists of 5th semester students teaming up from different engineering programmes. duration: 15 weeks.

Costs and commitment
Free of charge, sponsorship of materials or travel, supervision in various amounts is expected

Contract
Optional non-disclosure/IPR agreement

Results
E.g. technology concepts, business models, prototypes, demonstrators

Bachelor and master's thesis

Together with  a student and an academic supervisor, companies define a topic for a thesis which is of academic relevance. Duration: 15 weeks

Costs and commitment
Free of charge, sponsorship of materials or travel

Contracts
Contract with SDU, optional non-disclosure/IPR agreement

Results
Thesis, including e.g. prototypes, demonstrators, business models

Internship

Companies offer students (6th semester, diploma/B.Eng.) an internship in their company: full-time, duration: 20 weeks. Requires an engineer to support the student in the company.

Costs and commitment
Internship: suggested monthly salary ≈ 14.000 DKK. Salary is not a requirement for the internship. on working hours and hourly rates.

Results
According to internship agreement/contract

In-company project

Companies offer students  (3rd semester, M.Sc.) an in-company project related to academic topics: 2 days per week in the company, duration: 15 weeks. Requires an engineer or staff with adequate education (M.Sc. level) to supervise the student in the company.

Guest lectures, site visits and others

Companies offer guest lectures, company visits or other formats such as innovation camps or presentations contributing to the education of engineering students.

Research collaboration

Public co-funding

Companies apply with SDU and potentially more partners for public funding (e.g. from Innovation Fund Denmark) to run a joint project. SDU supports the application writing process.

Costs
Partners bear own costs that are co-funded.

Contract
Grant agreement, optional non-disclosure/IPR agreement

Results
Partners keep own results, IPR and publication rights. Licensing can be agreed upon.

Private co-funding

Companies co-finance a research project with the university, which is of scientific interest and relevant for both partners.

Co-financing based on individual agreement

Results
Partner keeps own results, IPR and publication rights. Licensing can be agreed upon.

Industrial PhD/Postdoc

Companies employ an industrial PhD student or postdoc on a full-time contract for three years, supervised by SDU and the company. Subsidies from the Innovation Fund Denmark may be available.

Costs
Salary agreed upon between the company and the PHD student/postdoc.

Results
Companies own the results, PhD student has to publish them (partly)

Services

Consulting

Companies commission researchers who provide their specialist opinion and technology expertise on a specific topic.

Costs
Based on working hours and hourly rates

Testing and analysis

Companies commission researchers who test technical components, devices and systems for failures or specifications.

Rent of equipment

Companies rent the university's lab space and analytical instruments which are run by the company's staff after a technical instruction.
