Great award for engineering students

Even though the bachelor of engineers, Jesper Holm Bjernemose and Anders Skytte Hansen, are working on the last piece of their master's thesis in Structural Engineering at SDU, there were a couple of happy and proud recipients who had chosen to take a day out to be hounored with the prestigious M-award (The Mechanical Engineering’s Initiative Fund Award) at an event in the House of Engineers in Copenhagen.

Even though the bachelor of engineers, Jesper Holm Bjernemose and Anders Skytte Hansen, are working on the last piece of their master's thesis in Structural Engineering at SDU, there were a couple of happy and proud recipients who had chosen to take a day out of the calendar to be hounored with the prestigious M-award (The Mechanical Engineering’s Initiative Fund Award) at an event in the Engineering House in Copenhagen. The award was given for their final project they submitted in 2016 and was made in collaboration with MAN Diesel & Turbo. Associate professor Søren Skrøder was the supervisor of the project.

 

Here we will briefly bring an interview with Jesper Holm Bjernemose and Anders Skytte Hansen explaining what their project was about.


Final project changed the procedures at MAN Diesel & Turbo

What was your project about?

Our project was about developing a new measurement method to determine a position of a mechanical component called a “cut-off shaft” in a fuel valve for large 2-stroke marine engines. The component's position determines when and how much fuel that is supplied to the internal combustion chamber. The product of the project was a fully functional and tested prototype. Later on the prototype has been further developed, and is now being used on all sizes of fuel valves when MAN Diesel & Turbo perform test runs with engines.

 

How did you get the idea?
Through internship in engineering, we saw that MAN Diesel & Turbo had a problem with the existing measurement method, where the durability and accuracy of the measuring equipment was not the best quality.

 

Why is it relevant?
The project was relevant because it was possible to improve the engine performance and durability of the fuel valve with accurate knowledge of the fuel valve's function. This can produce huge financial savings.

What can you use the M-award for?
Recognition of our work.

What are you doing right now?
For the present we are studying the Master of Science in Engineering - Structural Engineering at SDU. We are writing our master's thesis and have returned to MAN Diesel & Turbo, where we continue to work with large
2-stroke marine engines. This time we work with Piston Ring dynamics experimentally and analytically. We will graduate in mid-January 2018.

What do you hope to achieve with the project?
We do not have personal goals for the project. The project was about developing a new and better measurement technique, and we believe we have managed to do that. The only thing we wanted was for the project to be used and because MAN Diesel & Turbo have chosen to implement the solution and use it for each test, we accomplished what we wanted.
