Research interest

Martin Tepel did pioneering work on new strategies to prevent kidney damage. His seminal paper on the role of N-acetylcysteine in the prevention of contrast-induced kidney damage (Tepel et al., N Engl J Med 2000) opened the way for new developments for renal repair.

He recently established a platform for molecular monitoring after kidney transplantation (MoMoTx) mainly to improve the outcome of patients using molecular diagnostics. This includes determination of biomarkers in urine (e.g. calprotectin) as well as whole plasma proteome, transcriptome as well as non-coding RNA. Based on this platform several results from patients after kidney transplantation had been published (Am J Transplant. 2013;13:167-173; PLoS One 2014;9(11):e113006. doi:10.1371/journal.pone.0113006; PLoS One 2015;10(2):e0117315. doi:10.1371/journal.pone.0117315; Scientific Reports 2015;5:14882; doi: 10.1038/srep14882.)

He is also interested in the role of transient receptor potential channels for chronic kidney disease. His group established the regulation of transient receptor potential channels in cultured human podocytes (Arterioscler Thromb Vasc Biol. 2012;32:378-385. doi: 10.1161/ATVBAHA.111.241018)and endothelial cells (Hypertension. 2012;59:1232-1240. doi: 10.1161/HYPERTENSIONAHA.111.183608).
