Seven key questions

  • Was the Pontic village population transformed into politically active citizens?
  • Did Rome create a politically privileged class to meet the needs of a political system controlled by the elite?
  • Were the inland cities modelled on a Roman model (that is timecratic constitutions with property qualifications and censor-regulated city council (boulê), in which the important political decision were made), or on a Greek democratic model where a considerable larger council left more decisions to be decided by the assembly (ekklêsia)?
  • Did any Pontic cities have Latin rights?
  • Did euergetism play a decisive role in the life of the cities?
  • Did city territories correspond to the boundaries of former royal districts?
  • Were army veterans settled in the new cities to any extent?
