The lab is led by Kerstin Fischer. Kerstin received her PhD from Bielefeld University in 1998, after which she worked at the universities of Hamburg and Bremen. In 2007, she came to Sønderborg, initially as an associate professor for English Language and Linguistics, and more recently as a professor (MSO) for Language and Technology Interaction. Kerstin also leads the project Improving Language Pedagogy at the Prosody-Pragmatics Interface using Human-Robot Interaction, funded by the Danish Council for Independent Research. Furthermore, she led the Danish part of the EU-funded project ITALK, which explored construction grammar for the design of input for automatic language learning in human-robot interaction, and she organized a scientific network on construction grammar, funded by the German research foundation, for five years and applied construction grammar to the description of discourse and modal particles. Besides supervising the project, she contributes to the development of the theoretical model proposed.

Oliver Niebuhr
Associate Professor

Oliver Niebuhr is an expert in the phonetic (both segmental and prosodic) characteristics of speech communication and the (acoustic) analysis and of spoken language. He contributes to the HRI lab by providing advice on the elicitation, recording, and analysis of the communication between robots and machines. Moreover, he is interested in studying if and how established insights into the phonetic patterns of emotion, personal traits, speaker attitudes, and discourse organization can be projected onto robot speech, and how voice and pronunciation characteristics have to be adjusted to match with the robot's look.

Lars Christian Jensen received his MA in Business Communication & Communication Design from the University of Southern Denmark. During his studies, he part-timed as an interaction analyst for both humanistic and technical research groups and thus participated in many international interdisciplinary collaborations between designers, engineers and linguists. This work introduced him to fields such as Human-Robot Interaction, High-Tech Business Venturing and IT-Product Design. He is currently pursuing a PhD at the University of Southern Denmark in the field Human-Robot Interaction, in which he investigates how social robots can be used as a resource for teachers in foreign language learning environments.

Nathalie is a Ph.d. student at the Institute for Design and Communication. Her project is part of the larger project “Improving Language Pedagogy at the Prosody-Pragmatics Interface Using Human-Robot Interaction” where she will conduct experiments investigating aspects of native speakers’ and language learners’ prosody in human-human as well as human-robot interaction as a basis for the development of prosody-centered teaching materials.
