Random Mixtures can be DANGEROUS


Some chemicals shouldn't be mixed together. In fact, these chemicals shouldn't even be stored near each other on the chance that an accident could occur and the chemicals could react.  Some examples of mixtures to avoid can be found on various websites eg incompatible chemical mixtures.

Alkali metals (Li, Na, K)

Water, carbon dioxide, carbon tetrachloride or other chlorinated hydrocarbons.

Alkaline methanolates and methoxides

Water.

Aluminium (Al)

Hydrochloric acid, warm concentrated sulfuric acid, perchloric acid, strong bases, water, carbon dioxide, carbon tetrachloride and other chlorinated hydrocarbons.
Aluminium alkyls Water.
Ammonia (NH3)

Mercury, halogens, hypochlorite and hydrofluoric acid.

Ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3)

Acids, metal powders, flammable liquids, chlorates, nitrates, nitrites, sulfur, powdered organic material.

Aniline (C6H5NH2) Nitric acid, hydrogen peroxide.
Benzol chloride (C6H5COCl) Water.
Hydrogen cyanide (HCN) Nitric acid, alkalis.
Boron compounds Water.

Potassium permanganate (KMnO4) Glycerol, ethylene glycol, benzaldehyde, sulfuric acid.
Copper (Cu) Acetylene, hydrogen peroxide.
Hydrocarbons Halogens, chromium trioxide, peroxides.
Mercury (Hg) and its salts Acetylene, hydrogen, ammonia.
