Kedar Natarajan is a Danish-Institute of Advanced Study (D-IAS) Assistant Professor at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (BMB) since March 2018. He received his PhD from Imperial College London in 2013, followed by a joint postdoctoral appointment at Wellcome Sanger Institute and European Bioinformatics Institute, Cambridge, UK. His educational background includes a Master’s and Bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology and a Dual Bachelor’s in Computer Sciences from India.
During PhD and postdoc, Kedar has utilised systems approaches to understanding fundamental process during embryonic development. He has extensive experience with high–throughput single-cell genomics approaches and computational analysis including important publications from his postdoc. Kedar has also been a recipient of prestigious funding’s and awards including Medical Research Council (MRC)-Centenary Award, MRC-Career Development Fellowship and Marie Curie PhD fellowship among others.

Kedar’s research investigates the fundamental process of cell cycle during embryonic development (embryonic stem cells) at single-cell resolution using state-of-art imaging, genome editing, next-generation sequencing and functional genomics technologies. Simply, understanding how a single fertilized cell during development divides, scales and generates the incredible complexity of cell types, tissues and organs within human body. Kedar and his team focus on understanding how the crosstalk between cell cycle and gene expression influences cell-fate decisions in embryonic stem cells. The lab utilizes a wide variety of wet- and dry-lab tools to explore the mechanisms involved during cell-fate decisions and during dysregulation in genetic defects and diseases.
