Together with colleagues in Denmark and abroad, I develop and analyze models for unordered magnetic materials, colloids and biological and technological evolution, at all relevant time and space scales. Observations, computer simulations and experimental data are important elements of my projects, which often end up describing the emergent, i.e. collective properties.
For the untrained eye, the mentioned areas of my work can look very different, but important common features emerge when you go beneath the surface. The common denominator is the time-dependent behavior of complex systems. These consist of (really) many alternating degrees of freedom and lack the spatial and time symmetry known from ordered systems, e.g. crystals.
