Kick-off event for Science Education Hub September 26, 2025

PROGRAMME
2:00-2:10PM

Science Education Hub - Welcome

  • Introduction to the Hub vision and the preliminary Hub activity plan by Poul Nielsen, Connie Svabo & Rie Troelsen
2:10-3:40PM

Presentation and workshop by Lars Ulriksen:
The student journey into academia
The presentation and the workshop activities will revolve around the students’ journey into and through their university studies. In doing this, we will touch upon the following points:

  • Studying as becoming
  • The possible paths and possible selves of the students
  • The study journey as wayfaring and transport
  • Explicit and implicit assumptions about what students should learn, like and do

The time from 14.10 to 15.45 will be a mix of presentation and individual and group activities. As a part of this, the participants will share thoughts and experiences based on their own disciplines. By the end of the workshop participants will hopefully have developed their own ideas and perspectives on the interrelation between the curriculum, the teaching methods, the students and the assumptions of teachers.

A coffee break will be held during the session

3:40-3:50PM

Science Education Hub

The SDU Science Education Hub is a collaborative platform that supports innovation and professional development in science education. It connects educators, researchers, and partners to advance teaching practices and foster interdisciplinary collaboration. The Hub plays a key role in strengthening STEM education at SDU through workshops, networking, and research-based initiatives.
The SDU Science Education Hub is based on the intersection of three partners:

  • STEM Education Research Center – FNUG
  • SDU Centre for Teaching and Learning, SDU UP
  • The Educations at The Faculty of Science, NAT.

Keynote Speaker

Lars Ulriksen is a professor of science education sociology at the Department of Science Education at the University of Copenhagen. His research focuses on the encounters between students and the educational system—particularly within science and engineering higher education programs. He is interested in how students’ backgrounds, experiences, and expectations interact with the teaching practices, cultures, and structures of educational institutions. His work includes studies on educational transitions, student retention and dropout in higher education, and the challenges faced by students from non-academic backgrounds in upper secondary education.

Creative Pragmatics for Active Learning in STEM Education

At the event, we will have an opportunity to celebrate the new book published by Springer – Creative Pragmatics for Active Learning in STEM Education, co-edited by Connie Svabo and Chunfang Zhou (FNUG/SDU), together with Michael Shanks (Stanford University) and Tamara Carleton (Blekinge Institute of Technology). The book includes contributions from researchers at FNUG (SDU), SDU UP, as well as a diverse range of Danish and international researchers. It introduces Creative Pragmatics as a flexible and evolving approach aimed at fostering active learning in STEM and urges educators and students to develop competence and skills to navigate the unpredictable and multidimensional challenges of today’s science and society.
