Research

We are constantly finalising projects and starting new ones. Therefore, below is not an exhaustive list of projects, but a list of the themes that interest us.

Athletes' journey through different environments towards excellence

We have a number of projects that are about understanding the athlete journey and what characterises good environments on this journey. We have projects about understanding childrens’ sport environments, youth sport environments, talent development environments and elite sport environments.

High-performance environments

We have a special focus on elite sports environments. We have projects that investigate what characterises good elite sport environments and how coaches create such environments. As part of this research, we also investigate themes such as compassion, psychological safety and meaningfulness and the role they play in athletes' environments.

Mental health

Mental health is a central part of any culture of excellence. Good mental health supports athletes' long-term development, their here-and-now performance and their motivation to stay in sport. To this end, we have a number of projects exploring different aspects of mental health, including the role of environments in supporting wellbeing, coaches‘ and managers’ knowledge of mental health, development of mental health courses and more. We have contributed to a series of international think tanks on the topic.

Cultural leadership

Coaches have many tasks. One key task is to develop a culture that supports athletes' development, learning and well-being. It's all about leading culture. In our desire to optimise coaches' ability to provide this kind of leadership, we have a number of projects that include an international think tank and studies of skilled cultural leaders.

The psychology of peak performance

We are deeply interested in how people learn to perform under pressure, not just in the world of sport. That's why we're involved in a number of projects investigating mental strength in music, science, business and, of course, sport.

Good physical education

We are involved in projects that revolve around creating good physical education in primary and secondary schools and universities. These projects include meaningful physical education and physical education teacher education.

Health psychology and behaviour change

The centre, DRIVEN, runs a number of major interdisciplinary research projects, all dealing with behaviour change in a broad sense. These projects are carried out in close collaboration with other research units. For example, they are about how we can motivate people to live healthier lives, engage in physical activity, make climate-conscious choices and much more.
