From outbreaks of diseases to major geopolitical changes. Why SDU is educating specialists for a world in constant crisis

Supply chain disruptions, wars and energy shocks have exposed just how vulnerable global supply chains can be. At SDU in Sønderborg, students learn how to use data, simulations and artificial intelligence to help companies anticipate and manage the next major disruption.

When a container ship ran aground in the Suez Canal in 2021, it became a symbol of how dependent the world has become on global supply chains. Since then, businesses have faced semiconductor shortages, war in Ukraine, an energy crisis and growing geopolitical uncertainty.

Now, tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz are once again threatening one of the world's most important trade routes.
For companies around the globe, it is a reminder that supply chain disruptions are no longer rare exceptions. They have become part of everyday business reality.

– In the past, companies optimised their supply chains to be as efficient as possible. That worked well in stable times. But when disruptions occur, those same systems often become vulnerable. What we are seeing now is a shift towards greater resilience and robustness, says Elias Ribeiro da Silva, Associate Professor and Head of Studies for the Supply Chain Digitalisation programme at the University of Southern Denmark.

From efficiency to resilience

For decades, many companies organised their production and sourcing strategies around minimising costs and reducing inventory levels. However, the crises of recent years have revealed the downside of that approach.

When a key supplier is unable to deliver, when energy prices surge, or when a major transport route is blocked, the consequences can spread rapidly throughout an entire supply chain.

– Many companies depend on the same raw materials, energy sources or transport routes. As a result, a disruption in one part of the system can create ripple effects across the entire system. We saw it during Covid, during the semiconductor shortage, and we are seeing it again now, says Elias Ribeiro da Silva.

According to him, companies are increasingly investing in more resilient supply chains. Production is being moved closer to key markets, supplier networks are being diversified, and risk management is becoming a much more important part of business strategy.

When data becomes a competitive advantage

As uncertainty grows, so does the need for professionals who understand both supply chains and digital technologies. On the Supply Chain Digitalisation programme, students use simulations and scenario analysis to help companies understand the consequences of unexpected events.

What happens if a supplier cannot deliver for five days? Ten days? A month? How will production, finances and delivery performance be affected?

– We can simulate different scenarios and examine their consequences before problems occur. This gives companies a much stronger basis for decision-making when circumstances suddenly change, says Elias Ribeiro da Silva.

At the same time, artificial intelligence and data analytics are playing an increasingly important role. Today, companies have access to enormous amounts of information about everything from freight rates and commodity markets to energy prices and geopolitical developments. The challenge is turning that information into actionable insights.

– The volume of data has become so large that people cannot create an overview on their own. That is why we use digital models and artificial intelligence to support decision-making. Technology is not there to replace people, but to help them make better decisions, he says.

Educated for an unpredictable world

For students, the programme is about far more than logistics and planning. It is also about understanding uncertainty. While nobody can predict where the next major disruption will emerge, recent events suggest that further disruptions are inevitable.

– We do not know when the next crisis will come. We do not know how long it will last. But we do know there will be more. That is why companies need people who can analyse data, understand complex supply chains and turn insights into action, says Elias Ribeiro da Silva.

In a world shaped by trade disputes, geopolitical tensions and rapid change, those skills are critical to companies' ability to navigate the next crisis.
