Long-term effects of smallpox vaccination
Abstract: We explore the multigenerational effects of smallpox vaccination on mortality over two centuries. Unique individual level data of high quality from Sweden covering 30 parishes and cohorts born between 1766 to 1967 allow us to investigate whether vaccination affected the first generation of vaccinated, whether these effects persisted to the second and third generation and through what mechanisms. We use flexible parametric survival models to model the age-dependent effect of smallpox vaccination in early life across the life cycle. We combine them with the instrumental-variables method to address the influence of unobservable factors. Our results show that smallpox vaccination substantially improved survival of the first generation, and that these effects, with a reduced magnitude, persisted to the next generation.
