COVID-19 in Spain: its socioeconomic determinants and demographic consequences

Who: Jeroen Spijker
When: Monday, June 12, 2023 at 14:00
Duration:  1 hour
Where: Online

While air travel is what caused the coronavirus to reach Europe so quickly from China, the pandemic did not initially spread homogeneously across space. (Why did Denmark's first confirmed case occur a month later than France's and Italy's first case?). Neither did it affect only mortality, but also fertility and migration, and even the cause of death structure. Drawing upon recent research conducted by the presenter, this presentation endeavours to address three questions:

  1. Did the coronavirus follow any behavioral, social, and/or economic borders in Europe and the city of Barcelona?
  2. How much did this affect the demography of Spain?
  3. Were other causes of death also affected, or did COVID-19 act independently?
