Baltic eHealth

Rural areas are increasingly having difficulty attracting doctors. The trend with concentrations of hospital services, which join together specialized units at the bigger hospitals, puts further pressure on the healthcare benefits in the rural areas.

A decline in the supply of doctors can have consequences for the settlement in rural areas in the shape of migration. The aim of the project was to examine if telemedicine, also called eHealth, can help assuring access to healthcare, irrespective of address and maybe avoid further migration.

Baltic eHealth was a cooperative project between telematic actors and hospitals in Denmark, Sweden and Norway and two hospitals in Estonia and Lithuania. Coordinator of the project was the International Office at the Danish Centre for Health Telematics. Danish participants were, apart from CFUL/IFUL, also Hospital Funen and the Association for Danish Islands.

The project started in September 2004 and ended in May 2007.
