Period
2021-2024
Funding
The project is funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark.
Objective
The research project Green Transition in Primary and Lower-Secondary Education aims to investigate how students and teachers experience the quality of teaching that explicitly addresses the green transition.
The project focuses on aspects such as the balance (or imbalance) between students’ cognitive, emotional, and behavioral engagement in learning activities as part of schools' efforts to realize the ideal of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD).
What are the consequences for the perceived quality of teaching if it is overly cognitively oriented and neglects the emotional and practical aspects of ESD pedagogy? And how do teachers ensure the quality of their ESD teaching in terms of subject-specific pedagogy and balancing students' cognitive, emotional, and practical engagement?
These questions, and more, will be explored and answered through a comparative case study of three different schools currently working to implement the UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals as a central compass for organizational and pedagogical development. The project also encompasses a survey study of teachers and students across public, private, and independent schools.
The project will synthesize the research findings on perceived teaching quality related to the green transition into a new theoretical framework outlining criteria for quality teaching, which both teachers and school leaders can use in their efforts to realize the ambition of ESD.
