How to structure an oral presentation

Course description

This one-day workshop, on how to structure an oral presentation, deals with the importance of factors that dictate the type and length of an oral presentation, whether it is a scientific presentation at a conference, a class-room lecture, or your PhD defense.  The purpose of the course is to teach the participants to plan such presentations first on an overall level and then in detail, before producing the Powerpoint material.

This approach is easy to learn and guarantees that you aim your presentation at the right level, that it is related to a clear goal, and that your information is easily understood.

The course consists of lectures, workshops, individual work, and peer-review. There will be (reasonable) individual assistance from the course leader.

There are three requirements for this course:

  1. At the latest one week before the course, read the instructions on Itslearning about a short pre-course task (an article to read).
  2. Bring your computer
  3. Bring a task to complete during the workshop (conference presentation, classroom lecture, or thesis presentation).

Intended learning outcomes

At the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • understand the 'anatomy' of a scientific article
  • structure your own scientific article
  • help others with some confidence.

The course is free of charge for PhD students enrolled in Universities that have joined the Open market agreement and NorDoc
