Gerhard Nielsen's collection

This collection contains about 4.500 volumes. It is subject-wise a broad collection, but with an emphasis on agricultural literature, including the history of smallholders; practical agriculture, livestock and horticulture. Chronologically the collection includes books from 1564 but mainly covers the period 1870-1940.

The collection is stored in closed stacks and is in the process of being registered. The books can, however, be borrowed according to the library's normal borrowing rules. Please contact the library.

Background of the collection:
Landbrugskandidat Niels Gerhard Marius Nielsen (16.2.1882-6.5.1953) was the son of a smallholder from Herrested on eastern Funen. At a young age he took over the family business and developed it into an acknowledged role model, until he had to give up the property in 1926 due bad health. From then on and until 1942 he was a horticulture consultant for Nyborg og Omegns Husmandsforening. Apart from a number of professional and local positions of trust Gerhard Nielsen was the chairman of Konsulentforeningens Litteraturudvalg from 1912 and the author of a number of books and articles about smallholders, among these a bibliography of literature about smallholdings. Even before he died, Gerhard Nielsen's collection was known as one of the most valuable privately owned collections within its scope. He left it to Fyns Stifts Husmandsskole, - later called Nordisk Landbrugsskole in Odense. After the school merged with Tietgenskolen, the collection was handed over to The University Library of Southern Denmark in 2003.
