The Ernst og Stephan Epstein's collection

Stephan Epstein (1900-1973) was head of the department of mycological research at the Breslau Dermatological Clinic from 1929 to 1933 and head of the departments of radiology and allergology from 1933 to 1935. In December 1935, he left Germany and emigrated to the USA, where he founded the Department of Dermatology at the Marshfield Clinic in Marshfield, Wisconsin. In 1946 he was appointed Professor of Dermatology at the University of Minnesota. Two of his works are Allergic pruritus (1952) and An atlas and manual of dermatology (1959). Epstein was a pioneer in the field of research into photo-allergic dermatitis. In 1960 he was elected vice-president of the Society for Investigative Dermatology. He retired in 1965 and died in Madison, Wisconsin, in 1973.

The book collection was founded by his father, Ernst Epstein (1860-1922). He grew up in Breslau and took his medical education at the University of Breslau (as Wroclaw was called before World War II), passing his “Statsexamen” in 1883. After that, he was appointed “Assistent” at the "Königliche Klinik fur Hautkrankheiten” at Breslau, under Professor Dr. Neisser. Ernst Epstein’s dissertation Uber Zoster und Herpes facialis und genitalia was published in 1886. After this, he established a practice in Nürnberg, Germany and lived there for the rest of his life.

The University Library of Southern Denmark has received the Epstein collection (which includes periodicals as well as books) as a donation from Stephan Epstein’s son, Ernst Epstein (former Clinical Professor of Dermatology at the University of California, San Francisco, Medical Center) by the kind assistance of Professor, Dr. med. Klaus Ejner Andersen, Department of Dermatology and Allergy Centre, Odense University Hospital.
