Installation guide Endnote MAC - Employees

This guide is targeted employees at SDU.  Students should install via Blackboard and follow this guide

  1. Close all Office programs: Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, etc.

    ****************************************************************************
If you are new to EndNote, go to step 3.
If you have an obsolete version og EndNote (X6, X7 or X8), this must be removed first (step 2). Please note that previous personal settings to Find Full Text, Journal Term lists and personal modified styles, etc.  possibly will be lost with this update, and must be created again.
    *****************************************************************************
  2. Find the obsolete EndNote version under your Applications and remove it to trash. This will not affect your library.

  3. Open via Finder the Mac SDU Software Center.

  4. Find and install Endnote X9.

  5. Now you can find EndNote X9 in your list of programs. You can drag the program to your dock, which makes the access easier.
    *****************************************************************************
Previous EndNote users can now open their EndNote library.
Remember to configure syncronization of the library to MyEndnoteWeb. If you experience any problems with this, then follow from step 9-20 below. Previous EndNote users have also when installing the  X9 version recieved a new MyEndnoteLibrary + data folder.  You can delete these two new files, so they won't interfer in your future work.
    *****************************************************************************
EndNote in Mac creates a library automatically on your Mac, when installing the program. They call it My EndNote Library.enl, and it is placed in "Documents" together with a data folder called My EndNote Library.Data.

The library and the data folder only work as a couple and must be placed in the same location locally on your Mac hard disk. Don't save the  files on any shared  services (iCloud, Dropbox, OneDrive etc.) as the library will corrupt over time. Don't place the library in the data-folder.
  6. Find your library and data-folder in "Documents".
  7. Rename both files to something personal e.g. Yourname.enl andYourname.Data. This makes it easier to track, if you loose it and easier to recognize when sharing.
  8. If your Document folder is in iCloud, you should move the library and data folder from here to a folder locally placed on your hard disk (Macintoch HD) under your user profile.

    Look for the house:

    Like this:

    *****************************************************************************
You can open your library from here or via the program. When you open EndNote, you will see a box, where you can create an account to MyEndNoteWeb, so you can make a cloud based backup (you can also find it under the tab Help/Welcome to EndNote). If you loose your computer or it breaks down, this is your best opportunity for a safe backup, so follow the guide. You shouldn't make any other types of backup.
    *****************************************************************************
  9. Press "Set up your account" to configure an account at MyEndnoteWeb, where you can sync your library to.

  10. Press "Enable sync".

  11. Press "Sign Up".

  12. Fill in email, repeat same email, press "Submit" and "Done".

  13. Fill in email, prename, surname, create an EndNote password and repeat the password. Pay attention to the password requirements. Password is only accepted when all requirements are green. Read/schroll down the conditions and press "I Agree".

  14. Press "Done" in the EndNote registration is complete-window.
  15. Back in the program your mail and password is now registered. Press "Save".

  16. If your library isn't open, you should point to it.
  17. Complete the last part of the syncronization by pressing the button "Sync".

  18. You can only sync one library to MyEndnoteWeb, so if you have synced a previous library (or the same under a previous name), you will have to accept merging the libraries. Press "Yes" in order to complete the sync.

  19. When "Sync status" is green, your library is synced.

  20. You can double check the syncronization by logging on to your MyEndnoteWeb account via www.myendnoteweb.com. Here you can see if your online backup library is 1:1 with your local library.

    *****************************************************************************

  21. You can now open your library from the folder, where it is placed - or via the program.
  22. Open Word also and check if you can see a new EndNote X9 tab.

If you don't see the Endnote X9 tab in Word, you can try the following:

    • Close Word.
    • Open EndNote X9.
    • In the tab "EndNote X9", find and run the "Customizer-wizard".
    • Make sure that "Cite while you write" is selected, when you go through the customizer.
    • Open word again, and the EndNote X9 tab should now be visible.
  23. Some Mac users have experienced some problems when using EndNote. This can be due to several things, but it is often related to the Mac OS-version, EndNote-version and Word-version. Most common it is because the Mac hasn't been updated for a long time. You can search for solutions  EndNote's Support or in their Endnote Community - or you can contact The University Library's Endnote-support or  SDU IT-service's ServiceDesk.

Now you are ready to use EndNote.

If you need to use the feature "Find full text", please send a mail to endnote@bib.sdu.dk to get the links needed. EndNote gives you a lot of opportunities, that can make your work as a researcher easier. Join in on one of SDUB's EndNote courses or get more information on EndNote's official training guide.
