For my doctoral studies I am investigating the biomechanical properties of the vocal tract of birds, the syrinx. I am interested in how neural signals are translated into sound. My research involves systematic muscle stimulation of the syrinx in vitro under controlledpressure, flow and temperature conditions. In combination with high-speed imaging, micro-endoscopy and three-dimensional scanning this will provide insights in the biomechanical activities during phonation and hopefully help to close the gap between the neurobiology of birdsong and its acoustic output.
