Specific admission requirements - recognition of equivalent academic qualifications

If you do not meet the specific admission requirements, you can apply for recognition of equivalent academic qualifications. You must be able to demonstrate academic qualifications equivalent to the admission requirements. 

When you apply for a study programme, you must meet certain specific admission requirements. These are subjects that you must have passed at a certain secondary school level.

If you do not meet the requirements, the University may recognise you as having equivalent academic qualifications if you can prove that you meet the admission requirements in some other way.

  • Although SDU can process your application for recognition of equivalent academic qualifications, you as an applicant are often better off having an individual skill assessment carried out by VUC.  

    This is because SDU can only assess your application on the basis of submitted documentation, whereas VUC can conduct additional academic tests and examinations to assess your level.  

    Moreover, an individual skill assessment will grant you a certificate of skill proficiency, which will be recognised on an equal footing with a specific admission requirement – unless there is a grade requirement for the subject. This can be applied across education programmes and educational institutions.

Who can apply for recognition of equivalent academic qualifications?

You can apply for recognition of equivalent academic qualifications if, for example, you have passed a type of test in the subject area in question in the context of another course of study, through which you have acquired academic qualifications equivalent to the specific admission requirements.

Please note that you can only apply for an exemption based on the above criteria. Therefore, you are not eligible for exemption because you have relevant work experience, have been affected by exceptional circumstances, or because you haven’t had the opportunity to take the required courses. 

When we assess your qualifications, we compare them with the academic level and content of teaching in the corresponding upper secondary subjects (STX/HF/HHX/HTX).

Apply for recognition of equivalent academic qualifications by 15 March at 12.00 noon

To apply for recognition of equivalent academic qualifications, please: 

  1. Complete and submit SDU’s applicattion form for exemption
  2. Complete and submit your application for admission at www.optagelse.dk. Here you must upload evidence of your qualifications, such as diplomas and course descriptions from other educational institutions.

Getting a reply 

You will receive a reply to your application in SDU’s self-service solution, optag.sdu.dk.  

Initially, you will only receive an answer as to whether your academic qualifications can be recognised as equivalent to the specific admission requirements. If so, your application for admission will be treated on an equal footing with other applications.

  • If you know well in advance that you want to apply for admission, you can apply for pre-assessment. You can apply for a pre-assessment from 1 October – 15 November of the year before you apply for admission.
    The pre-assessment can only be used for the next intake (ie once), after which you must apply for a new one.

    If your application is pre-assessed, you must upload the decision as an attachment when subsequently applying for admission at optagelse.dk.

    Please note that for pre-assessments, we reserve the right to make changes to the admission order.

    The form for pre-assessment can only be accessed in the period 1 October - 15 November.

  • Decisions are valid only for the admission for which you have applied.

    If you re-apply for admission, you must go through the application process again and upload the relevant documentation.
