The aim of the project
The project aims to reduce the number of unforeseen deteriorations of patients in medical emergency departments by looking at how data from the information systems that hospitals already use today can be used to identify the acute patients who are at risk of developing unexpected life-threatening complications. The project builds upon lessons learned from the sub-project Identification of high-risk patients through Patient@home, where we worked on developing a new system for the identification of patients at risk: Patient Deterioration Warning System (PDWS).
PDWS is currently integrated into the emergency department´s monitoring systems, but with this project we wish to further develop the system by incorporating data that consists of information from patients themselves, as well as data obtained before arrival by ambulance to the emergency room. The project will also examine to what extent PDWS can reduce the number of patients with exacerbations.
The project outcome
- Development of interdisciplinary research collaboration between the engineering and the health sciences.
- Further development of the current PDWS to include pre-admission patient data.
- Evaluation of the PDWS´ effect.
