Effective investigation and response to invasive species using drones

The aim of the project

Communities will be able to save a good deal of money if the registration of invasive species can be done using drones – especially if it is possible to register the plants, improve the registration of plants before the population establishes itself. This is not currently possible using manual registration.

The projects wish to develop automated drone technology and image analysis to perform an efficient mapping of the landscape. Drones must learn to identify areas that are particularly vulnerable in relation to the spread of invasive species.

This also means that drones must be able to adjust their actions autonomously during flight. They must also be able to deviate from their original flight plans if they register areas of particular interest.

This technology will make it possible to prepare precise and detailed maps of the proliferation of invasive plants.

The project outcome

To develop drones that can recognise various type of invasive plants and map their location, size and reproductive status.  To make drones capable of performing calculations on location and thus make it possible to alter their flight path and carry out more detailed studies. Apply this technology for the early identification of an invasive species.
