EU-millions to boost position of strength in border region
Enterprises on both sides of the Danish-German border hold a strong position of know-how about effective power control and application – from electronic equipment and transportation to industrial production and energy generation. Now, 3 million euro granted by the EU and the Region of Southern Denmark must ensure that the position of strength is further developed and that the strong competences can improve the basis for economic growth and employment.
The growth market for renewable and alternative energy, energy efficiency and electromobility is expected to grow considerably in the coming decades. The field, often referred to as power electronics, characterises the Danish-German border region with strong companies and educational institutions and research environments of profound knowledge. A new cross-border Interreg project must help further develop this position in the years to come.
3 million euro for PE:Region
The University of Southern Denmark (SDU) with the Mads Clausen Institute and the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Institute are lead partners of the new Interreg 5A project entitled ”PE:Region”. The project is financed by Interreg Deutschland-Danmark with 2.5 million euro from the European Regional Development Fund. Another 0.5 m euro are granted by ’Syddansk Vækstforum’ as regional industrial development funds. The project must ensure that state-of-the-art knowledge is rooted in research environments on either side of the Danish-German border and that project results will be beneficial to local industry.
PE:Region will provide synergy and a stronger basis for the power electronics players of the region. The overall project objective is economic growth and employment in the Danish-German border region.
Project partners are located on both sides of the Danish-German border, and besides SDU they encompass: ‘Sønderborg Vækstråd’, Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel (CAU), Fachhochschule Kiel, FuE FH Kiel GmbH and WTSH. Moreover, a number of Danish and German networking partners and industrial enterprises take part in the collaboration that was officially launched at a kick-off meeting on Thursday 3 March at SDU in Sønderborg.
