Self-efficacy and work motivation among nursing assistants in elderly care in primary care

Project aim:
The PhD-project aims to identify factors defining and influencing self-efficacy and work motivation, respectively, among nursing assistants in elderly primary care. For factors influencing the two factors there will be put special attention to the influence of training programs.
The study will add the limited knowledge on field and provide municipalities with new opportunities to advance in providing a good and competence-enhancing environment for nursing assistants.
The main research questions:
1: Which factors define and influence self-efficacy among nursing assistants in elderly care? How is self-efficacy affected by the most important factors (of those identified) in both positive and negative ways? How does training programs influence their self-efficacy?
2: Which factors define and influence work motivation and satisfaction among nursing assistants in elderly care? How does the work motivation and satisfaction differentiate between one another? How is work motivation and satisfaction affected by the most important factors (of those identified) in both positive and negative ways? How does training programs influence work motivation and satisfaction?
Methods
The research questions will be looked upon from both quantitative (questionnaires) and qualitative (semi-structured interviews) perspectives. Main emphasis will be put on the qualitative method looking into depth of the lifeworld of nursing assistants. Informants will be nursing assistants having participated in dementia training programs from either Esbjerg and Varde municipality in Denmark. Interviews will be approached and analysed from a phenomelogical hermeneutic viewpoint.
