Automation and The Work of Art: A Cultural History of Cybernetics in Early Postwar Europe

In my thesis I focus on the profound transformations in the historical conceptualizations of the ‘work of art’ under the rapidly changing conditions of labor (hence also of artistic production) during the postwar economic, technological and political restructuring of capitalism. Studying the impact of early cybernetic science and information theory in relation to the intellectual and artistic avant-gardes of postwar Europe, particularly in France, I identify and critique structural convergences between modes of industrial production and intellectual and artistic ‘work’.
