I am working on Rentier State Theory and its application and implications on the political and economic aspects in the Gulf Cooperation Council's member states (Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, Bahrain, UAE). I will be reevaluating the theory by reexamining the tools classically used to maintain the rentier political system in those countries, considering the volatility of the oil market, shale oil revolution, and political instability in the wider MENA region. The main focus of this project will be analyzing the reforms of the labor markets of Qatar, Oman, and Saudi Arabia, in relation to classic Rentier State Theory, in an effort to make a connection between those reforms and rentier legitimacy.
