Pillar 1: Excellent Science
If you have an idea for a ground-breaking research project in Scientific Excellence, you can apply for grants under this pillar from the following four sub-programmes:
- The European Research Council (ERC)
- Future and Emerging Technologies (FET)
- Marie Sklodowska-Curie (including INT)
- Research Infrastructures
Within Excellent Science, SDU RIO primarily support the FET and INT programmes. INT is a sub-program under Marie Sklodowska-Curie.

Pillar 2: Industrial Leadership
The Industrial Leadership pillar is for people interested in application-oriented research and collaboration with companies.The pillar supports collaboration projects within:
- Application-oriented research
- Technology development
- Market-driven innovation
The pillar grants funds for the research and innovation programme LEIT (Leadership in Enabling and Industrial Technologies). The LEIT-program supports research, development and demonstrations within a range of multi-discipline and strategic technologies such as micro- and nano-technology, electronics, photonics, biotechnology, advanced materials and advanced production processes, information and communication technology (ICT) and space.
In addition, the pillar grants risk financing and subsidies for innovation projects in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Companies with ambitions for growth and internationalisation in particular can apply.

Pillar 3: Societal Challenge
The Societal Challenge pillar focuses on developing solutions for major European and societal challenges and is based on the seven sub-programmes of health, bioeconomy, energy, transport, climate, spacious society and security.
The individual programmes cover the entire chain from research to commercialisation, and focus on innovative solutions and societal impact.
