Prof. Nikos Ntoumanis is a Professor of Motivation Science at the Department of Sports Science and Clinical Biomechanics at the Faculty of Health Sciences at SDU. He also co-directs the Danish Centre for Motivation and Behaviour Science (DRIVEN) at SDU. DRIVEN is a multidisciplinary effort to deliver cutting-edge research, education, and consultancy on factors that support sustained behaviour change in various life domains, such as health, education, the environment, and the workplace Externally, he holds a fractional appointment at the University of Birmingham (UK) as an 125th Anniversary Chair.

Prof. Ntoumanis is Greek by origin. He has worked for many years in the UK (1998-2014) and Australia (2014-2021) and he is also a citizen of both countries. He was educated in Greece and in the UK. He received his PhD in Medical Sciences (1999) from the University of Exeter, UK. He has the title of Chartered Psychologist by the British Psychological Society. He has received Fellowships from the UK Academy of Social Sciences, the American Psychological Association, the British Psychological Society, the Society for Behavioral Medicine (US), and the Distinguished Scholar Award from the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (US). Prof. Ntoumanis has served on grant reviewing panels, been an editor-in-chief of an academic journal, and associate editor/editorial board member of various other journals from the fields of motivation science and health and exercise psychology.

His research, both applied and basic, focuses on personal and contextual factors that promote motivation for sustained behaviour change and result in psychological well-being. Areas of particular interest are physical activity promotion in different community settings, self-regulation of life goals, promoting health behaviours that support the climate change agenda, motivation in the classroom and in workplaces, and psychology of sport, with emphasis on applications of contemporary theories of motivation. His research has been published in various journals (see his Google Scholar profile) from the fields of psychology, behavioral medicine, and public health (e.g., Annual Review of Psychology, Perspectives on Psychological Science, Current Directions in Psychological Science, Annals of Behavioral Medicine, British Journal of Sports Medicine, Health Psychology). He has also been a lead or co-investigator of grants awarded by major funders in the UK (ESRC, MRC, Nuffield), Australia (Australian Research Council, Heart Foundation, Healthway, Cancer Council Western Australia), the European Union (Horizon, FP7, and Erasmus plus), Denmark (Novo Nordisk, Nordea, and Tryg Foundations), the International Olympic Committee, World Anti-Doping Agency, and the industry.
