Visualise your research: develop, condense, present

Course description

Data forms the backbone of our research and is the cornerstone of our day-to-day work. However, when working intensively with it, we risk losing sight of important details or getting lost in the sheer amount of information. In this course, we will explore ways of visualising data to help us navigating complex research questions.
Specifically, this course aims at: 1) using visualisations to develop a research proposal and plan, 2) using charts to understand and organise data in a clear and engaging way, and 3) creating a compelling visual presentation of your research in the form of a research poster.
The course aims at stimulating creativity and playfulness in working with data and research visualisations. It addresses basic principles of visual communication, introduces useful tools and resources, and imparts practical knowledge from the field of research communication. In addition to lectures, the course includes intensive practical work, both individual and in groups. Participants will work on their own projects, which may include research proposals, articles, posters, or similar.

Intended learning outcome

The course equips participants with the knowledge, tools and skills they need to use data visualisation in their day-to-day research activities, as well as to design appealing research posters. This includes an understanding of basic principles, guidelines and recommendations concerning visual graphics, as well as useful resources and tools. The course also encourages the development of additional skills such as creativity and software application.

Teaching methods

The seminar consists of lectures from researchers and professionals in addition to hands-on activities in groups and individually.
