Low self-esteem

Unsure about yourself?
There can be many individual and different reasons that lead you to think less of yourself, and there can be some situations where you have a low opinion of your own abilities.

Examples of doubts:

  • Can I pass my course?
  • Will I be able to handle my career in the future?
  • Will I ever manage to write my thesis?
  • Will I be able to be part of a loving relationship with someone?
  • And so on and so forth.

From top of the class to part of the crowd
A lot of talented secondary school students find that starting at university and being treated as an average student is a hard experience and a blow to their self-esteem. Many students experience failing an exam for the first time and find it hard to tackle. Perhaps you have been used to praise and recognition and saw yourself as being an exceptional student. Perhaps your parents, partner or friends also see you in this light and have difficulty understanding why you no longer get exceptional grades.

To create a new identity
The majority of students experience their time as a student as a period when they redefine themselves – they create an entirely new identity. For some students this process is natural and presents no problems. But for others this process can mean that their self-esteem is very fragile until they find their new identity. For some students, the process is so difficult that they need help.

Get help
You can visit the Counselling Centre anytime and talk about any negative thoughts you have about yourself as a student. Student Counselling offers an interview or series of interviews that can help you to be more aware of the reasons for your lack of self-esteem – to take a more nuanced look at yourself – and help you to break the negative “vicious circle” so that you can concentrate on your studies and use your abilities.
