From fundamental research to the clinic. This honours class in Geobiology is offered in English.
Molecular diagnostics is advanced disease diagnostics and therapy monitoring based on research and methods within biochemistry, molecular biology and cell biology.
This honours class will introduce you to the development of molecular diagnostics methods, their application in medical research as well as how these methods can be modified and optimized for reliable routine use when diagnosing and monitoring diseases.
You will get a thorough introduction to the principles underlying a number of modern molecular diagnostic methods, enabling you to gain an insight into how these methods are enhanced and used scientifically to characterize diseases. In addition you will be introduced to the requirements for implementing a diagnostic method in a hospital environment for routine examinations of patients.
By way of laboratory exercises and projects you will, through personal work and demonstrations carried out by specialists, achieve knowledge of how advanced molecular diagnostic methods are organized, carried out and quality assured. In doing so, the practical work will strengthen your theoretical knowledge of the methods and gain insight into the fundamental principles for reliable diagnosing, including reproducibility. Finally, through a practical as well as theoretical project you will learn to outline and test the conditions for molecular diagnosing using new biological markers.
