Name: Raj Kiran Wuddi
Nationality: India
Jobtitle: Bunker Trader
Company: Dan-Bunkering¨
I’m Raj Kiran Wuddi from India, and I came to Denmark 7 years ago to study MSc. In International Business. Today I work in Denmark at Dan Bunkering.
Back home, I wanted to experience a life completely opposite to India and I thought the best way to accomplish this was to get geographically as far away as possible from India. Scandinavia was again a place where I knew you wouldn't find many Indians or Indian students as this was again very important not to come here and be part of the "Indian" way of thinking. You might think I'm somehow racist to my own country people but I'm not. It was just necessary if I wanted to develop myself and be prepared to live in this global world.
I applied and got into a few universities in Sweden and Denmark. At that time I learnt a little bit about Denmark through the web and Odense within its fairytale history with H.C Anderson was absolutely the right choice. SDU had the program M.sc in International Business, which was just what I was looking for. The program had courses on culture management, human resources, business innovation and development which I was very interested to learn.
I learnt Danish by not going to any school, lessons but quite funnily; watching Danish television and English programs with Danish subtitles. I can speak, understand and read Danish but I must admit that I don't speak it as much as I should as I'm too lazy and the job environment in which I work with is unfortunately English.
SDU has prepared/equipped me with all the learning, skills, tools necessary to face the world both professionally and personally. Through lectures, meetings, conferences, study trips, tours and interactions with different cultures of the world. These experiences have given me a head start/advantage when I stepped into a global company like A/S Dan-Bunkering Ltd today.
During my 3 years at the university, I worked in AIESEC for 2 years, worked at Retro in Overgade for 2,5 years, Cafe Kraez for 2 years and also was a mentor to 2 foreign master program students. This was important to me as I wanted to get closer to the Danish community.. You could say this was my way of integration into Danish society. To be quite honest with you... It was never my intention to stay back in DK after I finished my thesis.
I wasn't looking for a job, but a lovely lady by the name of Eva Grady (International office SDU) who I’ve met many times, met a person in one of her daughters parent teacher meeting and asked me to give them a call. That very day, I casually called them and funnily enough again on the very same day I got a job after 2.5 hours of chit chat with my present managing director who had taken a so called "interview". We spoke about everything under the blue sky, but nothing about my education. I guess if you would ask my managing director today on why he took me, the answer would be that I was a very positive and outgoing person who has the right personality needed for such a kind of job. Believe me, at no time in this "interview" did we discuss about my education. My education was only a bonus and on a more serious note. I also believe they were at that time looking for an Indian to understand the culture and also to target the Indian shipping industry.
I came to Denmark where I wanted to see, experience, live and absorb a different way of life altogether. Without any hesitation I can tell you that coming to Denmark is the best decision I have taken so far in my life. I would call my story of coming to DK a success as I always wanted to do something different in and with my life and I've thoroughly enjoyed the last 7 years living here and look forward to cherishing my relationship with this beautiful and at times crazy (good) country when I eventually say goodbye.
