The Master's degree programme takes two years and is offered in collaboration with the University of Flensburg. The programme is international and is conducted in English.
The “Regions of Europe” line can be studied in Sønderborg, Denmark. This line introduces you to regions in an interdisciplinary programme with particular focus on borders and border regions as a laboratory for European integration and imparts a thorough knowledge of qualitative research models. The programme comprises a compulsory segment in the first year. In the third semester it is possible to combine a programme of electives at the University of Flensburg, complete an internship combined with an elective course, or study abroad at a foreign university.
The compulsory subjects are structured around the themes “borders” and “regions”.
1. Borders
The significance of borders historically, legally and politically and for Europe as a whole will be dealt with in the subjects:
- Boundaries, Territorial States and Sovereignty in a Regionalized and Globalized World (10 ECTS)

2. Regions
The various approaches to the concept of “Region” (historically, culturally, politically, administratively and economically) are dealt with in the subjects:
- European Regions, Regionalism, Regionalization – Theories, Typologies, Histories (10 ECTS)

- Social Change and Mobility (5 ECTS)

4. Master’s thesis and elective courses
You can choose to take elective courses at the University of Flensburg in the third semester. You can also choose to take a number of elective courses offered by our other MA programmes in social sciences and humanities in Sønderborg or combine the elective courses with an academically relevant internship at an institution or business. The fourth option is to study abroad for a semester at a foreign university.
