Danish in Kolding (master’s)
Danish deals with Danish-language texts and media production of all forms. We work with novels, short stories, poems, plays, rap texts, journalism, political speeches, advertisements, TV series and film – yes, with all the many and varied types of text and forms of expression that we encounter in our daily lives, in art and in the media.
The core areas of the course in Danish are, therefore, language, literature and media. We place emphasis on qualifying students to be able to analyse texts and media products and to be capable of seeing them both in their cultural and social context and from linguistic perspectives.
Danish as a subject includes initially Danish text, Danish language and culture, but we look at th course’s core areas in an international context, and we are pleased to have specil responsibility for dealing with modern Norwegian and Swedish culture, literature and language. As part of the course, therefore, there is a visit to the universities of Lund and Oslo.
The course in Danish at Kolding is arranged as class teaching with study group and individual study. At the start of the course both teachers and older students help the new intake to find their feet. During the course there are opportunities to take a work placement in a public or private concern such as, for example, a publishing company, and council’s department of culture, a library or a educational establishment so students can get an idea of what job opportunities there might be.
For example, we work with analyses of TV new bulletins, lifestyle programmes, films by Lars von Trier, the queen’s New Year speech and company branding. We study fairy tales by Hans Christian Andersen, stories by Karen Blixen, short stories by Helle Helle, children and young people’s literature and we study Danish and Nordic cultural and literary history. We focus in particular on Denmark in the 20th and 21st centuries.
