The Economic Development profile provides a strong focus on long- and medium run macroeconomic issues. Long-run issues deal with growth and development trajectories over many decades, even centuries. A key long-run question would be: Why did Europe escape the Malthusian trap in the late 19th century? Medium run issues would focus on at most three to four decades. A key medium run question would be: Why did East Asia manage to catch-up over the course of four decades? A distinctive feature of the profile is that it uses economic history to inform current policy debates. For this reason, students will also acquire some knowledge of macroeconomic history.
