Studying at the Faculty of Business and Social Sciences
While many universities across the world may seem similar, they often vary in their teaching methods. An important part of any stay at a foreign university is getting used to these differences. The most obvious difference for international students at the Faculty of Business and Social Sciences is the long duration of a single course. At graduate level students are often only expected to take three courses per term. Students have considerable choice over which courses to study and are expected to be able to study independently. The Faculty expects students to take a mature and critical approach to their studies, including preparing thoroughly for class. Students are expected to be able to analyse and discuss reading material in class.
Likewise, the University has strict rules about plagiarism. Plagiarism is the presentation of another’s work as one’s own. This includes copying portions of text from textbooks, the Internet and articles without quoting the source and presenting the ideas as one’s own. An important element of a university education is adopting a proper scientific methodology. Citation is a central element.
