Seminar: 'Jutland: International highway or national periphery?'
Speaker: Richard Jenkins, Sociologist, University of Sheffield and author of the book "Being Danish: Paradoxes of Identity in Everyday Life"
This illustrated lecture examines, in a historical context, the place of Jutland within the historical narrative of Denmark. One the one hand, it has been seen as det mørke Jylland, a benighted and backward periphery; on the other, it has been the repository and source of all the true Danish virtues...whatever they are! In this lecture, Richard Jenkins will look at the shifting nature of centre and periphery in Denmark over the last 2000 years, and critically examine the role of historical perspective in notions of 'centre' and 'periphery'. The lecture is open to the public.
